New Ukrainian Canadian novel centered around Georgian Bay

The Washington Post recently reviewed the latest novel from Ukrainian-Canadian author Janice Kulyk Keefer, titled Ladies’ Lending Library:

But if you’re in the market for a deeply thoughtful, beautifully written novel about first- and second-generation Ukrainians struggling to fit into comparatively bland, prosperous and easy Canadian society, this is absolutely your book. The setting is out-of-the-way Kalyna Beach, based on the real Georgian Bay, part of Lake Huron. An enterprising Ukrainian real estate agent has bought up a stretch of sand and bluffs and sold off lots to members of a Ukrainian community who live about six hours away, in Toronto. It is the mark of any upwardly mobile family to be able to send the wives and children away to a resort during the muggy summer months, and many families here do it, but at great psychic cost. Most of the men have been successful; one is even a millionaire who summers in a big house way up on the highest bluff. The other houses are ramshackle cabins, and the wives, though they have the luxury of an eight-week vacation, have their children to take care of, dishes to wash and laundry to do down in their respective basements, rubbing their knuckles raw on old-fashioned washboards.

Read more, as well as an Amazon review.

Janice has written many books about the Ukrainian experience in Canada, her most notable is Honey and ashes: A story of family about her family’s immigration experience to Toronto.

There are quite a bit of Ukrainians in cottage-country Ontario, close to Toronto there are large pockets in Hawkstone, Sauble Beach and Tiny Township.

Happy Ukrainian Christmas

Веселих Свят!  Hope you all enjoyed Christmas! Here are the press outlets that published a story for us:

In Canada:

Sadly, nothing from the presses here in Toronto.  On CTV Toronto News they did show a clip of svyate vechera at the Golden Lion here in Toronto’s West end.

Internationally:

Here are some photos from my dinner:

Boychuk ‘optimistic’ about playing

From the Toronto Star:

Ottawa–Team Canada winger Zach Boychuk is nursing a sore right ankle after falling awkwardly into the boards against the Americans on Wednesday night. “I couldn’t walk on it (after the game) but I can walk on it today,” said Boychuk. “I’ve been icing it all day. I’ve got time to rehab it, so I’m optimistic” to be in the lineup for tomorrow’s semifinal. “He’s been one of our better forwards, making big plays,” said coach Pat Quinn.

Zach Boychuk is an up and coming Ukrainian Canadian athlete with the Team Canada Junior Hockey Team. He was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round, 14th overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.  Zach hails from Calgary, Alberta and is looking to return tomorrow night against either Russia or the Czech Republic.  Boychuk joins the ranks on Team Canada with other notable Ukrainian Canadians such as Dale Hawerchuk and Dave Andreychuk.

Royal Canadian Air Farce takes its last flight Wednesday

The Royal Canadian Air Farce is a popular comedy show in Canada that is having its final episode tomorrow night after 38 years with some of its original members intact.  One of them is Ukrainian Canadian Luba Goy who joined in 1971 and was featured on the program for 35 years.  Luba is an active member of the Ukrainian Canadian community.

From the Toronto Star:

All things must end, and we’ve had a great one. Most shows learn of their demise second-hand. CBC gave us the great gift of returning for a 10-week “final flight” and a last New Year’s Eve special – the show that started us on TV 16 years ago. Our 10 episodes this fall ranked us No. 3 on the network. And for New Year’s Eve Final Flight, who knows? If enough fans tune in Wednesday night at 8, we’ll go out at No. 1.
