Ukrainian Congress Committee secretary gunned down in Binghamton massacre (Updated)

From the Toronto Star:

BINGHAMTON, N.Y.–A gunman barricaded the back door of a community centre with his car and then opened fire on a room full of immigrants taking a citizenship class yesterday, killing 13 people before apparently committing suicide.

…

The attack came just after 10 a.m. at the American Civic Association, an organization that helps immigrants settle in the United States.

Police Chief Joseph Zikuski said the gunman parked his car against the back door, "making sure nobody could escape," then stormed through the front, shooting two receptionists, apparently without a word.

The suspect, believed to be Vietnamese immigrant Jiverly Voong, 42, then entered a room just off the reception area and fired on a citizenship class.

Part-time caseworker Maria Zobniw was supposed to have the day off, but the call came from the immigrant assistance center that extra help was needed, and off she went:

Happy Ukrainian Christmas

Веселих Свят!  Hope you all enjoyed Christmas! Here are the press outlets that published a story for us:

In Canada:

Sadly, nothing from the presses here in Toronto.  On CTV Toronto News they did show a clip of svyate vechera at the Golden Lion here in Toronto’s West end.

Internationally:

Here are some photos from my dinner:

“The first thing that went through my mind was keeping it,” he said.

And then the Ukrainian immigrant remembered what his father, Vitalie Baraniuc, always says at dinner at the family’s home in Pacific.

“My dad is always telling us in this life you’ve got to work for yourself,” said Baraniuc, who goes by the nickname Moses. “If you take what doesn’t belong to you, it will catch up to you.”

Holodomor on NPR

A few weeks ago Chicago Public Radio’s Worldview program broadcasted a great piece on the Holodomor.  The show (which you can download or listen to) features segments with a survivor, clergy, academia, media and more!  Definitely worth a listen to.

Vitalina Yushchenko, daughter of President Yushchenko and a 27-year-old mother-of-two fashion model worked the runway in Milan on Tuesday.

Edit:  I just listened to this myself and it’s a great piece to listen to. It’s ideal for anyone who wants an introduction to the Holodomor in audio format.
